Exciting news! ‘Charlie Chan’ Series Lands Tzi Ma, Rae Dawn Chong and Aileen Wu.

I came across this titled article today about the impossible-made- possible from Variety Magazine. A reimagining of the great Detective Charlie Chan series, with Chinese-American actor Tzi Ma playing the sleuth! Here’s a short excerpt from the online article!

“Ma, known for “Mulan,” “Kung Fu” and “Interior Chinatown,” will executive produce and star in the title role. Chong, whose credits include “Interview With the Vampire,” “American Crime Story” and “The Color Purple,” will play Detective Joyous Green. Wu (“Alien: Romulus”) will portray Faye Chan, Charlie’s daughter.”

The series is set in Canada with Chan retiring from the Vancouver Police department to launch a private investigation agency. Guess it’s not definitive yet, as creators will present the package to international buyers at Series Mania Forum in France as part of Telefilm Canada’s Canada Pavilion. Read all about it here:

  1. Great find! Exciting!

Bigger’s Chan is in the public domain, so it can be used. We obviously won’t see the old film version of Chan. If those filmmakers succeed, many things surrounding Bigger’s invention will become interesting again: projects about Chang Apana’s life, for example, would be conceivable.

The series will probably be more serious nowadays, portraying Charlie as a calm type, hopefully not grim dark. Constant shootouts aren’t to be expected; it will remain more logical and emotional. But: A modern Chan who confronts prejudices, who even has his own doubts. Unusual.

Don’t expect many one-liners :-) Cultural differences will likely be quite noticeable, including through the daughter, who certainly sees things differently than her father. It will be a balancing act. We can look forward to it. We’ll surely hear more about it in the coming days.

    Didn’t we wait for this?
