August 14-17, Celebrate Charlie Chan: The Chinese-Hawaiian Detective out of Warren, Ohio.

Finally, after many years of meeting online to chat and view a Detective Charlie Chan film, members of the Charlie Chan Family Home have decided it’s time once again to meet and break bread in person! In honor of the 100th Anniversary of Author Earl Derr Biggers’ literary Detective Charlie Chan, Warren, Ohio will be the gathering place of those who are regulars at Rush Glick’s website: The Charlie Chan Family Home. If you’re in town Friday, August 15th, stop by for one of two public events at either the Warren-Trumbull Country Public Library, or the historic Robins Theatre. Here’s the agenda:

Public Events. First, at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library learn about real-life Honolulu Detective Chang Apana, Biggers’ inspiration for the character, then participate in a three-member panel discussion. Next, later that evening stop by Warren’s historic Robins Theatre, and watch what’s considered “one of the best” of the 40-plus Chan films, Charlie Chan at Treasure Island, 1939. The film stars: Sidney Toler, Cesar Romero, Pauline Moore, and Victor Sen Yung as you’ve never seen them before on the theatre’s 28 x 17-ft BIG SCREEN.

Many of the Family Home members have been chatting and watching films together, even before Rush Glick launched his website-museum over two decades ago. It is the oldest, most comprehensive repository of Charlie Chan information found anywhere. The group will also spend time strategic planning ideas on how to increase awareness and promulgate Biggers’ detective going forward through the twenty-first century.

To the best of my knowledge Biggers’ and his detective were last celebrated (anywhere) at Warren, Ohio’s month-long library program, One Book/One Community, March 2018. While the previous year, the Left Coast Crime Convention, Honolulu Havoc, hosted a number of Chan/Apana related events with Biggers serving as their “Ghost of Honor.” And nearly a decade prior, Hawaii film historian Steven Fredrick hosted The Charlie Chan Mystery Weekend, August 2010, in Honolulu, Hawaii. So let’s keep this show on the road! Hope to see you there!

  1. Barbara, I wish so too. Besides the library and theatre sites, I’ve sent to the Warren-Trumbull Country Tourism Board (already published) and The Tribune Chronicle Newspaper serving Warren and Mahoning Valley. Also, the tourism office told me that the website, Ohio Goes to The Movies, is going to do a feature on it. I’ve forwarded my blog to Mystery Fanfare and The Rap Sheet. Fingers & toes crossed for good participation!
